BURMESE MONKS FAST IN ALARM AND GRIEF FOR CYCLONE VICTIMS
WHO ARE BEING STARVED THROUGH WILLFUL GOVERNMENT NEGLECT
Petition the United Nations to Take Action on Increasing Burmese crisis

When: Thursday, May 15th 3-6pm

Visuals: 15 maroon robed Burmese monks and their supporters fasting, meditating and praying for Burma. Banners and signs.

What: 15 Burmese monks, members of the International Burmese Monks Organization, and their supporters will fast outside of the United Nations on May 15 -16th. Their goal is to persuade the United Nations to get unrestricted aid into Burma immediately. A number of the monks, relocated to the US from Burma after the monk-led protests last fall was brutally suppressed by the military junta, will be participating.

“We are not eating because our people are not eating. They are starving while the world waits and the Burmese generals steal the food aid. Maybe when the United Nations sees hungry people outside their doors, they will act more decisively,” said Ashin Nyaka, who is a visiting professor at Columbia University. The monk said they will not take food from Thursday morning until Saturday morning.

The monks petition the United Nations to take a more active, immediate role in getting supplies to cyclone victims before more die. They request the UN to act immediately to ensure that the victims are receiving the international aid that is amassed outside Burma’s borders. As one Burmese journalist inside Burma said, “One day’s delay can cause the loss of hundreds of lives.”

Twelve days after Cyclone Nargis hit the southern Burmese coast, Burma faces further crisis as the junta refuses to acknowledge the immensity of the disaster and the at least 2 million people who are on the brink of starvation and an epidemic of disease. The junta is refusing to give visas to many international aid workers and much of the donated food and supplies are not being delivered to victims. There are many accounts of the military siphoning off food to feed its soldiers, and supplies being sold on the black market.

UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon addressed the crisis this way on Monday, "We are at a critical point. Unless more aid gets into the country very quickly, we face an outbreak of infectious diseases that could dwarf today's current crisis.” Food aid delivered so far amounts to about one tenth of what is needed.

The monks delivered a letter to Mr. Ban asking him to go to Burma himself to assess the situation. They are also asking the UN Security Council to respond to this crisis with stronger diplomacy and even under the “responsibility to protect” of the UN charter.

အေထြေထြအတြင္းေရးမႉး ဖဒိုမန္းရွာလာဖန္းက “ျပည္ေထာင္စုစနစ္ကို အေကာင္အထည္ေဖၚတဲ့ေနရာမွာ လက္ရွိ စစ္အုပ္စု ကေတာ့ အႀကီးမားဆံုး အတားအဆီးတခု အျဖစ္နဲ ့ ႏွစ္ ၆၀ နီးပါး တည္ရွိခဲ့တာဟာ ၀မ္းနည္းစရာဘဲ။”

“က်ေနာ္တို ့ေျပာခ်င္တာကေတာ့ စစ္အာဏာရွင္ကို ေစာင့္ဆိုင္းစရာမလိုဘူး။ က်ေနာ္တို ့ ကံၾကမၼာ က်ေနာ္တို႔ ကိုယ္တိုင္ ဖန္တီးရမယ္။ က်ေနာ္တို ့ဟာ လြတ္လပ္မႈနဲ ့ထိုက္တန္တဲ့ ႏုိင္ငံသားေတြ အျဖစ္နဲ ့ ဆက္လက္ႀကိဳးပမ္းသြားရမယ္” ဟုေျပာဆိုခဲ့သည္။ ထို ့ေၾကာင့္ ကြ်ႏု္ပ္တို ့၏ တုိင္းရင္းသားႏွင့္ ဒီမိုကေရစီေခါင္းေဆာင္ တဦးျဖစ္ေသာ ဖဒိုမန္းရွာလာဖန္း မွာၾကား ခဲ့သည့္ စကား အတိုင္းပင္ ကြ်ႏု္ပ္တို ့အားလံုး ျမန္မာႏုိင္ငံဒီမိုကေရစီ ရရွိေရးႏွင့္ ျပည္ေထာင္စုစနစ္ ေပၚေပါက္ေရး အတြက္ ဆက္လက္၍ ဆထက္တပိုး ႀကိဳးစားသြားရန္ လိုအပ္သည္ဟု အေလးအနက္ ယံုၾကည္သည္။

ဖဒိုမန္းရွာလာဖန္းအေနျဖင့္ ျမန္မာႏုိင္ငံ လြတ္ေျမာက္ေရးလုပ္ငန္းစဥ္တေလွ်ာက္တြင္ မ်ားစြာ စြန္႔့လႊတ္ အနစ္နာ ခံခဲ့မႈအေပၚ ကြ်ႏု္ပ္တို႔ ဘားမားပြိဳင့္က ေက်းဇူးတင္ ဂါရ၀ျပဳ လိုက္သည္။

Underreported: Burmese Villagers' Lawsuit Against Oil Giant

Chevron is currently exempt from the US sanctions on Burma that have been in place since 1997. We look into whether Chevron is helping to prop up the Burmese military regime. We also find out how a group of 15 Burmese plaintiffs managed to bring a lawsuit in US courts against Unocal (later bought by Chevron), which used slave labor to build the pipeline that transports Burma's natural gas reserves out of the country.

Dan Stormer of CA-based firm Hadsell & Stormer was one of the lead attorneys in the case; Milena Kaneva is a filmmaker whose recent documentary “Total Denial” is about the Burmese class action suit against Unocal. NY-based Burmese activist Moe Chan is with Burma Point and is a director with the National Council of the Union of Burma.

Jamaica Action

On October 14, Burmese in Jamaica will actively hold a prayer service to pray for the monks and all people of Burma.

With the recent “Saffron Revolution” taken place, not only the Burmese people but also many native Jamaicans have felt the pain of seeing peacefully protesting monks and people being killed by the regime in Burma. On October 8, many Burmese people joined by some Jamaicans held a candle light vigil for those that involved in the movement in Burma at a park.

Dr. Soe Naung has been one of the approximately 300 residents living on the island for many years now. He is one of the most vocal people about the Burma regime’s brutality. He met with Prime Minister of Jamaica and requested for help.

Peaceful movement inside Burma has received much of sympathy from the people of Jamaica and their Prime Minister. With the request of Dr. Soe Naung, Prime Minister Bruce Golding has said to help. Dr. Naung said, “I will continue to do my best to get any necessary assistance, such as help at the United Nations, from the government of Jamaica.”

Military junta’s crackdown on the monks and people have caused immense pain in the hearts of Burmese and many Jamaicans in Jamaica. Many Burmese people said they will continue to do what they can to help the people of Burma.

Taiwan Action

On October 6, Burmese and Taiwanese joined together calling on the regime to stop killing the monks and people in Burma.

Last Saturday a rally was held in a pouring rain in Taiwan, where tens of thousands of Burmese live, chanted “We don’t need killer regime” and urging the regime to release all political prisoners including Daw Aung San Suu Kyi.

On the island rules by a democratically elected government, Burmese and Taiwanese expressed freely of their desire and freedom for Burma.

Protesters wearing Daw Aung San Suu Kyi picture-masks walked on Taiwan main streets showing support for the oppressed Burmese monks, students, and people.

Many activists at the rally continue to express of their sorrow for monks, students, and people who were killed, arrested, and tortured, vow to step up with support to achieve freedom and democracy in Burma.

Activists Warn Burma Senior Generals to Avoid Future Penitence

Urge Indian Government to Release Karen, Arakan Ethnic Nationals

Burma Point received a letter dated October 2nd from a former top official of Burma’s military. The hand written letter is an evidence of Inida military and the regime in Burma joined together to commit mass murders of Burmese people. Thus, we strongly condemn both authorities for killing Burma’s nationals.

Although the world, today, finds out about the regime’s current killing of Burmese monks and people, including ethnic nationalities, through internet, television, and phones, there are other mass murders that occurred behind the scene would be impossible for the international community to know.

According to a news article published by Asia Times Online on August 15, Indian government was facing difficulty in court for not providing proper evidence against the defense, Burma’s ethnic nationals Karen and Arankan, who were being accused of weapon “smugglers.”

The letter we received could be the evidence that Indian officials have been looking for. By looking at the letter, it is obvious that the Indian government transformed itself to an apologist of Burma military regime by plotting to kill some of our ethnic nationalities and arrest others without proper evidence to indict them in court.

In addition, the letter mentions more mass killings by Burma’s senior generals.

The question we ask is for how long the SPDC would continue to kill the innocent Burmese people. Now is the time for the senior generals to come out before the people. It is urgently needed to reconcile the nation sincerely by meeting with people’s representatives led by Daw Aung San Suu Kyi.

If Sr. Gen. Than Shwe and associates stubbornly refused to take appropriate steps for the nation we would like to warn of facing future penitence. In addition to what people witnessed of the regime recent killing of innocent monks, students, ordinary citizens, and ethnic nationalities, if more behind the scene atrocities, similar to the events mention in the letter, revealed we warn that Burmese people would one day surely punish the offenders.

In conclusion, on behalf of Burma ethnic nationalities, we request Indian government to release detained Karen and Arakan people immediately to any third countries that would accept them, and for India to become our good neighbor, the government must cease being apologist, killing our people, and selling weapons to the regime. We strongly urge the senior generals and associates to stop using good soldiers as your power sticks to brutally kill fellow nationals, avoid future penitence by standing up as “people’s soldiers” and implement requests stated above as soon as possible for the 50 million citizens of Burma.

What is FSCB?

FSCB stands for Fund and Supporting Committee for Burma.

Where is it located?

FSCB is based in New York, United States of America.

How was it formed?

On 27th September, 2007, a group of young Burmese people came together in a meeting and discussed Burma’s current situation and possible solutions. At the end of the meeting, the attendees unanimously decided to implement an effective solution in order to help the monks, nuns, students and people of Burma who are peacefully searching for Freedom and Democracy. The meeting unveiled “the Fund and Support Committee for Burma”.

What are the goals of FSCB?

The mission statement of FSCB is (To support monks, nuns, students and people in Burma) including;

(1) To ease the living conditions of political prisoners and their family members by providing financial and medical support.

(2) To provide food, medicine, and financial assistance to detained monks, nuns, students and people using every possible ways.

(3) To give moral and financial support to the family members of those who were killed, in carrying out a peaceful funeral service.

(4) To create a “network of freedom” in order to help those people who are running away from being arrested, detained, tortured and killed, and to bring them out of the country.

FSCB Held a Successful Event for Burma

With the current atrocities in a Southeast Asian nation, we, Fund and Support Committee for Burma, realize that there is a lack of care and protection to the suffering people of Burma by their nation’s authorities. Thus, we have taken an initiative to do our best to help all the suffering people of Burma.

Today, we held a prayer service event in New York with invited monks for those that were killed by the regime in Burma. At once, we raised funds for continuing democracy movement in the country.

We found that many people are supportive of our actions to be able to help provide assistance to our fellow Burmese, who are struggling to achieve freedom and democracy in Burma.

For those who could not come, we ask for you support too. As we pledged to do all that we can to serve our people in front of the monks and attendees at the event, we will try in anyway possible to provide support to all suffering Burma’s people living under great oppression.
